1. Within a 60 second time limit for the open, the 11 division and the 8 division, and a 75 second time limit for the 5 division, a team must cut out from the herd and pen three head of cattle with the assigned number. The youth will remain with a 90 second time limit. The fastest time wins. A warning may be given to the team working the cattle at the thirty seconds of time remaining.
- A team consists of three riders. After a three-person team competes in one go-round, if one person is unable to compete for some reason, it is the option of the two remaining contestants to compete if they desire, but in no event may less than two persons compete. Another rider may not substitute a rider after the first go is completed.
2. All cattle will be bunched on the cattle side of the start/foul line within the designated area (within the two UTPA signs on the back wall) before the time begins; the line judge will raise the flag to signal when the arena is ready. Contestants will be given their cattle number when the flag drops. Any delay crossing the start/foul line may result in a “no-time.”
3. a. To call for time, one rider must be at the opening of the gate and raise a hand for the flag. Flag will drop when the nose of the first horse enters the pen, the assigned cattle are fully in the pen, and that rider calls for time. However, time continues until all unpenned cattle are on the cattle side of the starting line. In the event that an animal escapes from the pen after time is called for, but prior to the time that any unpenned cattle are on the cattle side of the line, the team will be judged a “no-time”.
b. If an animal escapes as a team is calling for time, they will be judged a “no-time”.
c. “Escaped Animal” is one with any part of the animal out of the pen (do not enter the pen to move your cattle out after calling for time, unless no herd settlers are available).
d. A tarp must be used to cover the back of the pen.
4. A team may call for a time when only one or two assigned cattle are penned. However, teams penning three head place higher than two or one, regardless of the time. In multiple go-rounds contest, in the event that teams pen their cattle in only one go-round, the fastest time wins, regardless of which go-round. In multiple go-rounds contest, the teams that pen in each go-round will beat teams that fail to pen in a go-round, regardless of the number of cattle penned or time.
For example: Times in 3 go-rounds beats times in 2 go-rounds, times in 2 go-rounds beats times in 1 go-round, and times 1 go-round beats a “no-time”.
5. A team calling for time with any wrong numbered cattle in the pen will be judged a “no-time”.
6. Contact with cattle by hands, ropes, bats or any other equipment, or hazing with any equipment or apparel will result in a “no-time”.
7. If more than four head of cattle are across the start/foul line at the same time, the team will be judged a “no-time”. At any time during the run, when any part of the 2nd trash cow crosses the line it will result in an automatic disqualification. Any part of the fifth animal that crosses the line will invoke a “no-time”.
8. Sixty (60) seconds after the last member of the team finishing leaves the arena, the following team must be in the arena ready to ride. Any delay will be judged a “no-time”, unless waived for a good cause.
9. As each new team begins a run, there should be 30 head of cattle in the arena. In the event that a team draws a number where more or less than three identical numbers are in the arena (at the time of their run), that team will have a rerun in that same set of cattle, on their same numbered cattle, at the end of that group of cattle (times for all other teams within such a miss-numbered herd will remain the same on that same numbered cattle).
10. a. In the event a team is given a number that has already been used, within a set of cattle, a rerun must be given immediately upon discovery, using the correct number within the same set. In case of other official or mechanical error, a rerun shall be given at the end of that set of cattle.
b. If an animal leaves the arena a team member MAY declare for time to stop. The team can either be given a “no-time” for unnecessary roughness, can be given time on their remaining cattle, or be given a rerun but cannot better their time, depending on the judge’s decision. If the team finishes the run after the animal has left the arena, the team will not be given a re-ride. If more than one rerun is given in any go-round they will be given in order of occurrence in the same set of cattle.
c. If a team observes an unfit, injured, or unidentifiable animal after committing to the cattle, the team must immediately pull up and notify the judge. If a team observes an unfit, or injured, or unidentifiable animal before committing to the cattle, the team must notify the judge. Once committed to the cattle any re-ride will be given at the judge’s discretion. Committed to the cattle means the team has crossed the foul line and their cattle number has been given and the flag is dropped to start the time on that run. In the event the judge rules the team is entitled to a rerun, they will be allowed to work at the end of that group of cattle and they will work their same cattle number. No reruns shall be given for tired or worn out cattle.
11. Decisions of the judges are final. No judge may enter any class that he/she judges. Judges shall be a line judge and pen judge.
12. Cattle must be rotated in order at the beginning of every class, prior to the final go. When odd sets of cattle are use, the second go shall start with the middle herd.
13. A team shall be disqualified with a “no-time” by either judge for any action the judge believes to be unnecessary roughness to cattle.
14. The Foul line shall be between 25% and 50% from the end of the arena. The Pen shall be situated 25% from the arena back but no more than 75 feet.
15. The Pen size will be 16’x 24’ with a 16’ wing and an 8’ front panel. The gate opening shall be 10’, 16’ from the side of the arena. A tarp must be used to cover the back of the pen.
16. Falling of a horse and/or rider shall not eliminate the entry, however, any attempt by a dismounted rider to work the cattle before remounting will result in an automatic disqualification.
17. The clock will run one second longer than any division’s time limit during the penning divisions. Example, on a 60 second run the clock will cut off at 61 seconds.
18. Herds shall stay out of the arena until the Judges and Timers are ready. Herds shall not be left standing in the arena for an extended time prior to the start of a new set.
19. The cattle will be settled at the beginning of the show. However, the cattle will be run through the pen during settling. The Cattle Director will oversee the settling, making sure the cattle are ready to, the pen is set up correctly, and that the show starts on time. The Cattle Director will choose 3-4 people to assist with the settling, all other riders should exit the arena.
